League History

YEAR BY YEAR HISTORY:

1995

The inaugural year of the women's basketball league began at Sarnia Collegiate.  Four squads were formed,
with seven or eight players on each team.  That year, only six games were played (round robin twice). The officials
were two young, enthusiastic local basketball players, Jason Kaul, and  Keith Concisom.  T-shirts were awarded
to Team 1 the winners in the first season. Captained by Shelley Vanderbeld, Team 1 had the following  players on
their roster: Marnie Buchanan, Leslie Richards, Carolyn Leaver and Maureen Robertson. They posted 4 wins in
their 6 game schedule.

1996

The league moved to Lambton College.  NBA team names were given to each team.  Carded officials were established.
The league schedule was extended into August (one season only) due to the interest to keep playing. A donation of $200.00
was made to the Lambton College Women's Volleyball Team.

1997

Thirty-six players registered up from the 32 the year before.

1998

Introduction of the shooting contests:  Foul shooting and 3-pt line shooting.  Team names changed to those similar to the WNBA.

1999

The seven-week league was won by the Comets, captained by Carolyn Leaver.  The Sarnia Hornets soccer team volunteered to scorekeep the league.  The team was provided a $175 donation for their volunteerism.

2006

Referees Les Hoover and Brett Oake, who have officiated the league and volunteered their time for 10 years, decide to "hang up their shoes".  A warm welcome to our new official Shawn Ryan.  Due to a great turn-out, $150 was donated to VOICE, an organization for the hearing impaired, in honour of Kathy Arcuri-Arnott's son, Nathan.

2015

The league had a new look this year, with all teams sporting reversible blue and white jerseys. After 20 years of running the league that she created, Shelley Pretty hands it over to Emily McLachlin. A $100 grocery gift card was donated to our local homeless youth shelter, The Haven.

2016

Jay Moran and John Larsen kindly returned to referee our women's league. This summer consisted of many extremely close and competitive games. We were happy to see lots of new and returning faces this year!

2017

With the gym being unavailable due to the exciting construction of the new Athletics facility at Lambton College, the league kicked off it's 23rd season in the gym at Sarnia Evangelical Missionary Church. Although overall numbers were smaller this year, we had a handful of new participants. Referees are now randomized and assigned through the Sarnia Referee's Association. All participants in the finals got a free basketball cookie from Emily! The 4 Hoop Loop teams sported new NBA names this year to change things up, teams were split into Heat, Lakers, Celtics and Warriors.

2018

The 24th Annual Hoop Loop league had some exciting new features this year! We were able to play back at the College this year on the fresh new floors in the small gym. The league expanded from 4 teams to 6 teams - from running 2 games per night to running 3 games per night with the help of Lambton's Women's Basketball Head Coach, Kendel Ross. We also updated the white and blue reversible jerseys to feature the Lambton Lions logo and our "Hoop Loop" league name. Emily's cousin, Courtney Steeves, kindly joined our Hoop Loop family as our scorekeeper!

2019

The 25th Annual Hoop Loop league continues to grow! This year we were able to play in the BRAND NEW (and beautiful!) Athletics facility at Lambton College. Emily and Kendel were able to expand the league once again - moving to a summer of 12 weeks (instead of 10) and 8 participating teams, resulting in 4 games per night! The last 7 weeks of the league were formatted into a playdown bracket to add a competitive structure to the league. We had exciting additions of 4 "invitational teams" including the Northern seniors, Wallaceburg seniors, St. Patrick's seniors and Lambton College Varsity. As a nod to our 25th Anniversary, 3 players were recognized who have participated all 25 years. On behalf of the league, Emily presented Shelley Pretty, Kathy Arcuri-Arnott and Courtney Thornton with flowers, thank you cards and Lambton College t-shirts for their 25 years of contributions and dedication to our league. We also brought back the 3-point competition for a fun throwback to the 3-point contest Shelley used to run annually.

2020-2021

The 26th Annual Hoop Loop league hits pause for two summers in a row as the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted our lives.
